Why was the ballpark built at the Diamond Products/Gillette site?

Although developers explored ways to reuse the Diamond Products/Gillette site for a number of years, a financially feasible plan did not emerge due to the site and building’s size, environmental issues, and unique topography. CHS Field created an opportunity to clean the soil and build a multi-use, year-round facility that fully utilizes the site, creates new connections into downtown, and is compatible with the historic Lowertown neighborhood.
Several other cities have completed similar projects, building minor league ballparks on vacant properties within the city. These ballparks have been a key part of urban revitalization efforts because they have transformed underutilized properties into places that attract visitors as well as commercial and residential development.
